1. How do you become certified?

Before you can go out on the road and take any calls for assistance, you must first receive training and then take a national and state certification exam. Once you pass the exam, you will receive a certificate and that certificate makes you an official EMT.

2. What type of work schedule is expected?

While EMT schedules can vary, many EMTs work a shift schedule that can include 8, 12, or even 24-hour shifts. Because EMTs are always needed, you may be required to work weekends or holidays too. Some EMTs have back-to-back calls, while others may have to wait to be dispatched to the next call.

3. What is a typical day? Or, what can a new EMT expect each day?

This is a question that is almost always asked, especially by aspiring EMTs. There is no typical day as an EMT, and you will find that there is something different going on day in and out.
